This classic diner offers friendly service and heaping plates of country-cooked, made-to-order deliciousness like omelets, sausage and gravy, pancakes, and combination platters. Get your caffeine fix at Farmhaus Coffee Co. which also serves up tasty treats like sweet potato toast and bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches. The French Press offers coffee and espresso, decaf, herbal tea, and light lunch fare.

How to Spend New Year’s Day

You’re probably excited about tackling all your New Year’s resolutions, and getting outside and exercising is likely at the top of that list. Plan to get some fresh air with a New Year’s Day hike. Our picks for winter hikes when the weather permits and the Blue Ridge Parkway is open include the short, steep Humpback Rocks hike that ends on a high, rocky outcropping with expansive views of the Valley. Nearby Dobie Mountain is a flatter loop trail with a nice overlook to the east and the intrigue of attempting to spot wreckage from an old plane crash. Other hiking options include letting the dog off the leash and wandering the trails at Coyner Springs Park. Young families (or those feeling the effects of a late night) will enjoy the short, flat experience of the South River Greenway, especially if there’s snow or ice on the ground. If it’s a really cold day, a mile-long stretch of the Blue Ridge Tunnel trail is sheltered and underground.

Stay safe and have a wonderful holiday. Happy New Year!
