Are you interested in a more involved, longer-running class? Been thinking about wood firing but weren’t sure what that looks like? Want something fun to do and look forward to through the winter? Jake is offering a special throwing and wood-firing combo superclass in early 2027. Participants do not need to know anything about wood-firing. Participants should be able to center on the wheel and pull up confidently. This is is a special offering. Please read carefully before signing up. This class includes 8 regular weekly class sessions on Monday mornings, plus a cone 10 firing of our fast-fire wood kiln at the end. The wood kiln firing includes both space in the kiln and an introduction to and participation in the firing itself. This class is limited to adults aged 18+ Since this is a cone 10 firing and our usual classroom clay is cone 6 reclaim, there are some limitations on clay. We’ll provide a bag of cone 10 Bmix (white) and a bag of brown stoneware per student. Student will need to purchase/provide other or additional clay. (If you’re new to the studio, this is different for us. Normally we just include all clay in the cost of a class, but it’s usually reclaimed cone 6. Since this class needs something different, that won’t work.) Dates and Times 8 regular weekly class sessions will be held on Monday mornings, 10am-noon, from January 11 – March 1, 2027. We will load the wood kiln on Saturday, March 20 at 9am. (participation encouraged but not required, usually takes about 2 hours, if you can’t attend please arrange for getting work to the kiln) We will fire the wood kiln on Sunday, March 21 from 9am – about 6pm. Plan to work a 2-2 1/2 hour shift, with supervision. We’ll coordinate shifts closer to the firing date. We will unload on Thursday, March 25. If we have to make up any class dates due to weather, etc, we’ll try to do that during in the gap we’ve left between the planned last class on March 1 and the firing. It’d be one of those Monday mornings. (That’s part of the reason for leaving that gap in dates.) About the Kiln and Firing In 2024, we built an Olsen Fast Fire Wood Kiln at Make Waynesboro Clay Studio. This kiln can be fired in one day, unlike some other types of wood kilns. We have fired the kiln many times, and we are getting lots of pots with some nice tones and amazing reduction glazes. This is not the kind of wood kiln that will result in lots of ash deposits. The results are a little more subtle. This is meant to be a glaze kiln with subtle wood fire hints. Participants do not need to have prior wood fire experience. We are happy to teach. Everyone must follow directions closely and must observe all safety instructions. This will be a cone 10 firing. Each participant will get a half stack. The shelves are 16×18 and you get about 20 inches worth. Work will be spread evenly throughout the kiln to ensure everyone of kiln placement. What’s it cost? What’s the fee include? Participation is $400 per person. Discount for members. You must be signed in to receive your member discount. Price includes: 8 weeks instruction, use of glazes, 1 bag brown cone 10 stoneware, 1 bag cone 10 white stoneware Includes firing a half stack of work and participating and learning about the wood fire process. Where? Classes inside at the studio, firing is outside at the wood kiln site which is at the same facility as the studio. About the studio: Make Waynesboro Clay Studio is operated by Jake Johnson Ceramics LLC.
