Sherando Lake Recreation Area is a scenic Blue Ridge Mountain getaway just a short drive from Waynesboro. Located in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests near Lyndhurst, the recreation area features two mountain lakes surrounded by forested slopes and Torry Ridge. The 25-acre Lower Lake offers the area’s main recreational amenities, with a sandy swimming beach, picnic areas, an accessible swimming ramp, fishing, and opportunities for non-motorized boating. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon or an active day in the mountains, Sherando Lake offers plenty to do. Swim or relax on the sandy beach, enjoy a picnic beside the water, or bring a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard for a peaceful outing on the Lower Lake. Gas-powered boats are not permitted, and boat access is hand-carry only. Anglers can fish both lakes, with trout stocking typically taking place in the spring and fall and a Virginia fishing license and required trout privileges are needed. Several hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest and mountains, ranging from shorter walks around the recreation area to more challenging routes toward Torry Ridge and White Rock. Visitors should be aware that there are no lifeguards, cell service can be limited, and it’s a good idea to download maps and plan ahead before arriving. Bring food, water, sunscreen, and other supplies you may need for the day, as onsite options are limited. Dogs must be leashed and are not permitted on the beach or in the swimming area. Always check current conditions, regulations, reservations, and recreation information ahead of time. Camping is also available at the recreation area, with family and group options requiring reservations.
